Briefing Paper: The Impact of COVID-19 on Cross-Border Movement on the island of Ireland

Posted On: 05 Aug 2020

North-South

In light of the current public health crisis relating to Covid-19, and as part of the Centre for Cross Border Studies’ ongoing research into the impact of the virus on the island of Ireland and the connections between the two jurisdictions, this Briefing Paper examines the pandemic’s effect on cross-border traffic flows. This analysis uses data on the number of cross-border journeys recorded by Transport Infrastructure Ireland and available on the TII website. The data has been taken from a total of 12 TTI traffic counters located in close proximity to the Northern Ireland/Ireland border, focusing on journeys recorded in the first 6 months of 2020 and compared with the same period in 2019. While we are making certain assumptions with the statistics available, they nevertheless give us a picture of the impact Covid-19 has had on the amount of movement between the two jurisdictions on the island of Ireland.
