John Hewitt International Summer School bursary: Una Higgins

Una Higgins is a writer from County Down and one of our The John Hewitt Society International Summer School bursary winners.

She spent fifteen years working across Africa, Asia and the Middle East using creative writing and other expressive therapies with children and vulnerable people living in conflict zones.

Una returned to County Down in 2019 and has been working on community initiatives to strengthen the writers’ community in Lecale.

In a project with Down Community Arts and Down County Museum, she is using creative writing with minority communities to explore the shared history and cultural legacy of mental health in Northern Ireland.

Una is in the process of completing her first novel.

The Summer School has awarded a record-breaking 70 bursaries this year.

The International Summer School takes place from 27-31 July in The Market Place Theatre & Arts Centre, Armagh.
