The Centre has responded to the consultation on the draft Programme for Government 2024-27.
The response was prepared by our research associate Edel Quinn.
We welcome the commitment in the Programme for Government to ensuring regional balance in economic development under Priority 1: Grow a Globally Competitive and Sustainable Economy.
Our response recommends that any programmes and policies take account of the needs of frontier workers who make an important contribution to the economy in the border region. We recommend that NI government departments adopt a “border-proofing” approach to assess for cross-border impacts across all their policies and strategies. People move across the border every day to work, learn, access public services or retail and the Executive should seek to reduce the barriers as far as possible.
Our response also acknowledges the difficult budgetary position across all the departments and the constraints that imposes.
