The Centre for Cross Border Studies is looking for Research Projects

Posted On: 12 Jun 2000

Press release 11 June 2000

The Centre for Cross Border Studies has been set up to research and develop co-operation across the Irish border in education, health, business, public administration, communications and a range of other practical areas.

The Centre is looking for experienced researchers to carry out a number of six month research projects, to start in early September 2000 and be completed by the end of February 2001. The projects will investigate the state of cross-border co-operation in the chosen subject areas; identify and analyse gaps in present co-operation and barriers to improved co-operation; and formulate detailed proposals on how future co-operation might be upgraded and made more effective.

This is an OPEN CALL for research projects in practical subjects with a cross-border or a North/South dimension. Unlike the Centre’s first advertisement last year, no categories are specified. However since the Centre’s brief is to do policy research and ‘action research’, it is vital that applicants draw out both the policy and practice implications of the proposed work. The main aim of research commissioned by the Centre is to illustrate how cross-border and North/South co-operation can overcome barriers, fill gaps and generally bring more practical benefits to the people of both jurisdictions.

N.B. No previously submitted research proposal, unless significantly revised, will be accepted.

In making their proposals, researchers should detail consultations they have had with policy-makers and senior practitioners in their chosen field, and explain the significance of their proposals for cross-border co-operation in the light of these consultations. The research should include provision for further, structured consultation with such expert groups. Research grants will be in the region of Stg£6,000-£12,000, although they may be larger in exceptional circumstances.

Successful applicants will be informed of the Centre’s decision by 30th August 2000. The Centre will expect researchers to begin work by 10th September, and will require a final report by 28th February 2001. Researchers will be expected to make presentations to conferences and seminars.

Requests for further information should be sent, before 6th July, to the Director, Centre for Cross Border Studies, 39 Abbey Street, Armagh BT61 7EB
