NERI Seminar: Regional aspects of sectoral clustering & innovation development

A seminar titled ‘Regional aspects of sectoral clustering & innovation development across the island of Ireland’ was presented by Niall O’Donnellan, Senior Research Associate, Centre for Cross Border Cooperation today.

Niall made his presentation based on “Progressing globally ambitious sectoral clusters on the island of Ireland” (2023) – Accelerating Growth: Progressing Globally Ambitions Sectoral Clusters on the Island of Ireland, and “Towards an all-island perspective on regional development” (2022) – Accelerating Growth: Towards an all-island perspective on regional development.

A discussion was opened to the floor during which the chairperson, Dr Tom McDonnell, NERI Co-director, presented questions to Niall.

Key questions covered:

• What is sectoral clustering and does it matter?
• What is the regional dimension to sectoral clustering?
• What is the regional dimension to innovation?
• How can we progress regional sectoral development?
• What can “our place” do in context of global sectoral trends?
• What are regional co-ordination and leadership aspects?

Niall is an independent strategy advisor/mentor and development economist, and a Senior Research Associate with the Centre for Cross Border Cooperation. He has worked in a range of roles in economic development, both in industrial and enterprise development and in education and training. Niall holds a Masters (Econ) from University of Galway.
