CCBS Policy Seminar “Working for Wellbeing: Crossing sectors, crossing borders”

Representatives from community organisations, educational institutions, the health sector, local government and a range of other interests from both jurisdictions on the island of Ireland attended a policy seminar in St Columb’s Park House on the 14 of November 2018, organised by CCBS. Exploring the theme of “Working for Wellbeing: Crossing sectors, crossing borders”, the event brought together a number of speakers with significant experience in collaborative work to improve the wellbeing of communities at a local, regional and cross-jurisdictional level. After some introductory remarks by CCBS Deputy Director, Anthony Soares, on the Centre’s approach to the wellbeing agenda on the island of Ireland, the audience gathered in Derry/Londonderry heard from Shane Campbell of the Irish Central Border Area Network (ICBAN), Brendan O’Hara from the All-Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care, Tara Farrell from Longford Women’s Link, and Pippa Coutts of the Carnegie UK Trust. While Pippa was able to speak of Carnegie’s involvement over recent years in working with the devolved administration in Northern Ireland to develop a more holistic approach to the wellbeing of citizens in the region, she also had the opportunity to refer to its current work with local government here through the Carnegie UK Trust’s “Embedding Wellbeing in Northern Ireland” programme. Before Pippa, Shane of ICBAN set out how local authorities are working to identify opportunities to cooperate on a cross-border basis on the implementation of their community plans, while Tara offered her reflections on developing wellbeing statements through the Public Participation Networks at local government level in the Republic of Ireland. Brendan, meanwhile, spoke of the sharing of best practice and learning across the island of Ireland in terms of work to improve hospice and palliative care provision, which included encouraging the involvement of service users and carers in the Institute’s ongoing work.
