Time to measure impact in border regions: COVID-19 crossing borders
Thursday 15th October 2020
8.30 – 10.00 (Ireland/UK time)
Learning from different approaches taken by different EU Member States and regions to the Covid-19 pandemic, this workshop brought together experts from the Transfrontier Euro-Institut Network (TEIN) and its partner institutions to discuss the urgent need and methods for measuring the impact of national and regional policies on the cohesion of cross-border territories and on cross-border relations. Coronavirus has shown us how it’s time to really measure impact in border regions!
The Centre’s workshop as part of EU Regions’ week looked at the impact of Covid-19 in border regions in collaboration with Institute for Transnational and Euregional cross border cooperation and Mobility (ITEM) & the Euro-Institut.
The Centre’s Director, Dr Anthony Soares, welcomed participants to the virtual workshop before discussing Covid and cross-border cooperation on the island of Ireland before handing over to Anne Hofmann, Manager, Euro-Institut/TEIN, to facilitate the session, beginning with a conversation with Andy Dritty, Member of the Committee of the Regions, Belgium. Anne and Andy discussed the impact of Covid within their own border regions with Andy giving some examples of the restrictions imposed of the Belgium/Netherlands/German borders. Martin Unfried, Senior Researcher, ITEM, built upon the examples given by exploring some of the difficulties for cross-border cooperation in his region during Covid crisis, despite the existence of strong cross-border links. Continuing the examination of the impact of Covid on European border regions, Clarisse Kauber, Research Manager at Euro-Institut/TEIN, gave a perspective from the Upper Rhine border region during the crisis. The final presentation of the day by Eduardo Medeiros, Geography Professor / Integrated Researcher, ISCTE, gave a broader view of the crisis by focusing on the effects of Covidfencing on European Cross-Border Regions. The session concluded with a panel discussion and several questions from the audience.
